Weekend Homework

For my Drawing II class, I have to draw three large drawings of colorful balls using oil pastels. I chose to draw a bowl of skittles. You can see the beginnings of one in the foreground. While I worked on my homework, Mom and my cousin Adam played around with watercolor.

In my Photography class, the teacher went over shutter speed. As homework he requested that using different shutter speeds we take pictures of people "hauling A". He said, "Cats don't do this very well, neither do chickens, neither do old people". Adam was kind enough to volunteer. Zoe volunteered too. My teacher also requested that our subjects over exaggerate their arm movements to cause more motion to capture. Adam doesn't naturally run like this. Every time he passed through my camera view...well I laughed really hard. It was funny as H.

I and another cousin have both moved in with Grandma for the semester. This is the beauty/office bedroom that has now become Adam's room. Little does Adam know that Grandma and Buddy are chilling in his room while he's off at work. I bet he figures it out. And, I bet he doesn't care - just funny.

So there's this old song that my Grandfather used to sing to my mom all the time, Dirty Lil. We only knew the first verse, but thank to the power of Google we now have the whole song! The song I copied had Dirty Tess in the third verse, but I changed it to Jess. I like to feel apart of these things. Another funny thing is that Pete and Luke are both in our family too. Pa would have enjoyed the whole song!

Preparing for the Woodfiring

I didn't realize it, but woodfiring is kinda a big deal for pottery people. Just look at these two guys as they load the kiln. They NEVER smile, but here they are practically giddy. The guy in the kiln is from Texas Tech. That's another thing I didn't know - when you have a woodfiring, potters from all around come to participate (and have some of their work fired as well).

Here is Steve Hilton, the dude in charge. He cut wood into the night preparing for two days of firing.

I think they started the kiln around midnight Friday night. I came in at 4:30 am...AM...to help out. Here is the sun shining through the wall in the early morning. You can see the smoke coming off the kiln, and notice all the wood...that's not all of it.

A couple of weeks into the semester, I hadn't quite found my niche and was feeling a little blue. I remember thinking, "I just need someone to grin at me!" Then I got to know Carissa a little more. Not only does she grin, but she also laughs heartily, talks to everyone, and sticks her finger in people's noses. You take people like Carissa out of this world and it's a sad, boring place! Now I just need to meet a nice guy who grins and sticks his finger in unsuspecting noses...then I'll have it made!

For my tooty class, project 2 (part 1) we learned about figure/ground relationships. We had to choose an object to create a silhouette. Wherever the silhouette overlapped another silhouette we left the space white. I chose the monkey from the barrel of monkeys.

For part 2, we learned about repetition and rhythm - basically wallpaper. BTW, my monkey wallpaper made it to the hall of fame, woohoo!

Also, I included the "do you have a license for your minkey" clip from The Pink Panther only because I thought about it continuously while painting my monkeys.

The instructor of my tooty design class picked out six of the classes' pieces and displayed them in the hall. You can see my final airplane drawing in the lower right. For this project, we had to each choose an object to draw from. From the top is a dental tool, a sunflower, a dream catcher, a tea can, a bracelet, and a toy airplane. After this I'll take a break from posting so much of my own artwork! I feel like I've been tooting my own horn too much... even if it is tooty design.

The MSU ceramic gurus, Steve and Tyber, pulling lava hot pottery from the kiln and placing them in trash cans full of sawdust.

After a couple of minutes, they pulled the pottery from the trashcans and placed them in a rubber trashcan full of water to cool them off.

Then we fished them out of the water to oooh and awww over them.

This is my first completed pottery piece of my MSU college career!

Design Process

In my 2D class, aka "tooty class", we did an object exploration drawing three different objects using only pen and ink. Pen and ink meaning a bottle of ink and pen nibs which I had never used before. These were to be line drawings - only lines, hatching, and cross-hatching.

After we explored our objects, we chose one to expound on. I chose a toy airplane. Then we did five concept drawings of our object (pictured here). In class we had a silent critique, where we walked around to other's sketch books, looked over their concepts, and wrote down our favorite and least favorite stating why. Then from that feedback we chose one concept to redraw on a cold press board for the final project to turn in.

Before I can take all the really cool, interesting art classes here at Midwestern, I have to take some beginning, prerequisite classes - Drawing I and 2D Design this semester. The teacher for Drawing I is very laid back and relaxed. Last class, she taught us different shading techniques. Our homework for the weekend was to draw 3 eggs using ribbon shading, squiggly line shading, and cross-hatching.

My 2D Design class is a little more intense. We just turned in our first big project on Tuesday. The instructor had us each hang our work on the wall and then stand there beside it for a class critique. The students were all very tactful, but they all had a little something to say. I was the last student to be critiqued. Standing up there with my art work felt like standing in a lineup naked.

I guess since we've had a little bit of rain, I've been thinking about fall which makes me think about last fall which makes me think about France. I'll be sitting at my desk working and all of a sudden be overwhelmed with a memory of France. Not so much an exact memory, but more a memory of a sensation - like the feeling of sunshine while we sat at a cafe, the noise of crowds, the smells of my aunt's apartment, or just the warm feeling of being with my family and having a wonderful time. It's the sensation of traveling and adventure, and I miss it. I"m thankful for the trips I've had and I look forward to many more!

The owner of my old home took this picture of me while I was visiting, and was thoughtful enough to email the photo to me. So, here I am in all my glory standing in front of one of my favorite views. Catherine, in my last post's comments quoted Georgia O'Keeffe, "God told me that if I painted it often enough, I could have it." Below is one of Georgia's many paintings of Pedernal, the mountain that she was speaking of. That Georgia, she's a funny lady! I think I might need to get cracking on painting my own mountains.

The House That Built Me

This is our old house in New Mexico. When I was 10 years old we bought the small cabin and, the summer that I was 11 my family added on the stucco half of the house. We moved from this house to Oklahoma when I was 14. I guess we weren't there too long, but it is one of my favorite homes.

Anytime I'm up that way, I always drive by our old house. After hearing Miranda Lambert's song "The House that Built Me", I thought it might be fun to actually stop in and say hello to the owners. Of course, that song is a little bit sad, but my visit was far from sad. The owner was very gracious to show me around and let me take photos, and listen to all my little stories about living there. I think he himself was fascinated by the experience. One funny thing - every time I mentioned my folks he'd ask if they were still alive. Yep, they're still alive and kickin' it.

I plan on posting a small series of the modeling bloopers for your enjoyment.

We hiked Mariners Ridge. This is at a peak looking down at another peak and the coast. I love hiking! I was ready to keep going on to each peak, but the beach was also calling us. I'm just going to have to go back. Also on the flight home, I sat next to a man that is an avid bow hunter there in Hawaii. I'm not much of a hunter myself, but I wanted to go with him just for all the hiking.

Pointe Du Hoc

We had an enjoyable time at Pointe Du Hoc It was a beautiful day for exploring and climbing around the old bomb craters and fortification ruins. The whole experience felt surreal, and there were some definite "crazy world" moments. At one point we were all looking inside one of the gun casements and in there with us were some young men from Germany. It struck me that within my Grandma's (who was standing there as well) lifetime we fought against the Germans in that very spot and now we are touring along side of them. I wonder if either side ever thought that would be the case.

Also touring around that day was a man, his wife, and their dog. I can't remember where they were from, but they were not English speaking. The man and I were down in one of the old fortifications looking into the rooms. The rooms are pitch black, so I'd take a picture letting my camera flash into the darkness. Then we'd both look at the LCD screen to see what was in the room - nothing. Ahhhhh.

I finally made up my mind and decided to go with Red Sky Pottery for the title of my business venture. Thank you for all your input!

Right now I am working on making enough quality pottery to sell on Etsy. According to the Etsy seller guide, people are more likely to buy from you if they know more about you - something about buying from people and not from websites. So, blogging is encouraged. Of course, I already have a blog, but I want the title of my blog and the title of my pottery shop to match. I am moving my blog to http://redskypottery.blogspot.com/

What's in a Name?

Here's the deal - I am setting up a shop on Etsy for my pottery. I need THE BEST shop title/url EVER. Listed below are some ideas, and I want feedback from you guys! Since I live in rural Oklahoma and I use earth tone glazes, and leaf and grass imprints on my pottery, I was thinking of an "earthy" title. I have also been using a leaf design when signing my pots - that's why many of my title ideas include the word "leaf". Also, Etsy encourages blogging about your craft. We pulled over to look at this ancient cathedral as we passed through a small town along the way. At first glance, this picture appears to be inspirational, but it's really kind of the opposite. I didn't mean for this picture to have any kind of hidden message - I just thought it was a nice image.

Also, I almost captured both the Roman and Gothic arches from when the church was added onto and the style updated...kind of interesting.

They had certain calls (in French of course) at which the horses would either rear up or back kick. Occasionally, a horse would throw in a back kick when it wasn't called for which sent me into a fit of giggles every time!

After the show we got to go around the stalls and visit with the horses.

One of the other visitors saw me take this picture and she commented that it was unusual to see a horseman on a bicycle. Of course, I don't really know what she said, but that's what she said. I'm always fascinated that you don't have to speak the same language to understand people.

Okay, some of the horses scared me. We'd be petting them one minute and then they'd throw their heads over like this the next. It's not something I'm used to.

This isn't the greatest picture, but it's a great memory! It's of Nina while we were at the top of the Eiffel Tower. She's reading a panel written in French. Nina had told me about a movie where a guy is reading through a contract and while he's reading he says, "Ah huh...yes, yes....I understand some of these words." Well, all through our vacationing we'd come across information panels written in French. I figured if I could pick out enough words that I recognized, I'd be able to get a good idea of what was being said. I never could pick out enough words to make sense of anything! So, the running joke during our vacation was to say, "Ah huh....yes, yes....I understand some of these words." It never got old either.

Day 1 - We arrived in Paris after an eventful flight. My Uncle Craig met us at the airport with already bought metro tickets and whisked us away to our hotel in the Montmartre area. After we ate a late lunch, Grandma rested in her hotel room, Craig ran some errands, and Nina & I walked up to the basilica and stopped in little shops on the way. Then we all met back up and headed towards the Seine for dinner and a night cruise. Apart from the flight, it was a very lovely day!

Apparently, you cannot fire low-firing clays with high-firing glazes at high firing temperatures.

Who knew? Actually, a little voice inside my head said, "This ain't gonna work." And looking back, I think the guy at the supply house knew. When we bought high-firing glazes he sent us home with the appropriate clay. By mistake, I later bought the wrong clay. Not only did the glazing turn out poorly, but they all cracked as well. Bummer, huh? I had been very excited about these three pieces. Ah well, I'll try them again.

My buddy Benny is directing a producing a movie "Moving On". You can check out the info here. In this picture the camera man, his assistant, and Benny were trying to get the right frame level for the shot. Yes, that is a trick-or-treat bucket on a skate board on some 1x4's.

I've never been around for the filming of a movie. It's interesting...for about an hour. No, there is a lot of down time. The cast and crew certainly aren't boring people, so it's been fun!

In our pottery class a couple of weeks ago, someone asked the teacher where the term "throwing a pot" came from. I had never noticed the strange terminology before. The teacher had noticed, but didn't know where the term originated from. After my last post, the "throwing" just seemed too weird. I did a in depth investigation (google) on the strange term and found the following article. To throw. Potters at Marshall Pottery in Texas describe their work at the potters wheel as turning. They understand only the modern meaning of to throw and do not use it to describe their work. However, the Old English word thrawan from which to throw comes, means to twist or turn. Going back even farther, the Indo-European root *ter- means to rub, rub by twisting, twist, turn. The German word drehen, a direct relative of to throw, means turn and is used in German for throwing. Because the activity of forming pots on the wheel has not changed since Old English times, the word throw has retained its original meaning in the language of pottery but has developed a completely different meaning in everyday usage. Those who say they throw pots are using the historically correct term. Those who say they turn pots are using more current language. Both are saying the same thing.

I'm learning how to throw pots and Mom is re-learning. It's slow going. Most of what we make is not worth firing and therefore made back into clay. Actually none of it is really worth firing, but we need to learn how to use our kiln as well!

Early Morning Coffee

The big thing to do while visiting my grandma in Lubbock is to sit out on her patio for morning coffee. Here is my brother passing on the tradition. I've probably have said it before, but sitting around drinking coffee in the mornings is one of my most favorite things!
