Beginnings of Dad's Garden

I remember once when I was a little girl being with my Dad while he visited with a man who used to wash dishes for us when we had our restaurant. He was a very peculiar man who spoke super-dooper fast and then he said "heeeeeeeerbss" then he went back to speaking super-dooper fast again and then he said "diarrheeeeeeeea". I was so impressed with his articulation that I told my mom all about it later. Now no one in our family can just say herbs - it's always heeeeeerbs (same with diarrheeeeea).

You might explain that Abenancio was a Hispanic man from Questa with a very strong Northern NM accent. "Peculiar" is a good word for him. Some people might have thought "Abe" was mentally off, but he was just very different. He was a very nice man and did a bit in the Army back in the late 70's, but had difficutly keeping a job due to being so odd. "High strung" comes to mind. But the heeeerrrbs and diarheeeea was so funny - So was the time he turned the faucets knobs so high that the water blew the faucet off and water shot all over the kitchen and Abe. He could not figure out how to get the knobs turned off and kept covering his head as if to keep the water off of him. I kept a straight face while I got the water turned off, but I went outside and laughed till I hurt.

maybe he smoked heeeerrrrbs to cure the tension...which may have led to the other. idk...he has a cool name though.

Thanks, Paul Harvey, for the rest of the story!

Yep, that's what it was Piper! That's why he was so peculiar - it was all that heeeerb smoking.

Jesse, when I was a kid, I used to love helping my dad plant strawberries. He had a small veggie garden too, and I'd lie on my stomach ,looking into the darkness under the plants leaves, and watch all the little insects scurry around. I can remember wishing that I was that small and could live under the plant leaves. Of course, years later they made that movie Honey I Shrunk the Kids. If I had seen that movie when I was a kid I probably would have changed my mind about being that small!
Abe sounds like an interesting character that you could use in the book you know you are going to write someday!

That's a really sweet memory, Fire Fox! I might put that in my book too ;)
